Hi, I’m Jess often referred to as Jess-Bess, and I’m writing to you from Kansas — the home of Dorothy, Toto, and me.
I’m a beautiful lemon-and-white girl with dainty features and a head tilt that melts hearts. I’m still young at just about a year and a half, and I’m learning every day how wonderful life can be. I’m a perfect 44 lbs, spayed and up to date on all my vaccinations and on heartworm prevention.
I was born in southeast Kansas and was meant to be a bird dog. When I was old enough, last October, I was sent to a trainer to start my career. Unfortunately, things didn’t go well. I was scared — so scared that when I was leashed, I froze and wouldn’t move. My trainer told my owner that I was too timid to train and that it would be best to stop and try again later.
Instead of giving me the time and help I needed, my owner surrendered me to the trainer with the intention that I be euthanized at a local shelter. I was terrified, but the shelter staff stepped in and gave me a chance. They reached out to Pointer Rescue Organization (PRO), and that decision saved my life.
After a short stay at the shelter, I was transported across the state to northwest Kansas to live with my foster family. Now I live with a very large foster family, and I fit right in! I’m great with big dogs, little dogs, cats, goats, and even horses. There’s also one very grumpy old bulldog, and I respectfully give him his space. My favorite buddies are my foster brothers, Chance (a GSP) and Axel (a Brittany), and my foster sister Emilie (a GSP). We play outside for hours, tugging Jolly Balls, carrying Benebones around the yard, and watching our neighbor Mrs. Jo’s chickens through the fence. We take chicken surveillance very seriously!
I am sweet, smart, and a little silly once I feel safe, but I’m not a dog who trusts easily. I especially love my foster mom, who often works from home and shows me just how good it feels to trust and relax. It took me some time to seek out attention, but now I look forward to our evenings watching TV together, all piled up with the Poms on the chaise. At night, I sleep at the foot of the bed — right on my foster mom’s feet — which I think is the perfect spot.
I enjoy car rides, especially those that end up in wide open spaces where I can run until my heart is content. I have excellent recall, am trained to the tone on an e‑collar and do best when I can follow the lead of confident, playful dogs. Having another dog — or several — helps me understand our daily routine and that my home and my people are safe. I do my best when I have a job to focus on, and ongoing training helps me build confidence and trust with my people — it’s something I truly need, not just enjoy.
Because I have a sensitive heart, I’m looking for a special forever family — one that understands that trust takes time. I’m still afraid of strangers and remain cautious around my foster dad. I have never shown aggression, even when I’m extremely frightened, but fear is something I continue to work through. I need a calm, patient home where I can warm up at my own pace with gentle encouragement, but what I need most is someone who understands that trust isn’t instant for me, but once earned, it’s deep and loyal.
I was given a second chance when it mattered most. If you’re willing to be patient with me and continue showing me that people are kind, safe, and reliable, I promise to be the most loyal, loving companion. I’m ready to find my forever home — because as we all know, there’s no place like home
From Jess’s foster mom:
Jess has truly stolen our hearts. She is a remarkable dog — gentle, intelligent, and deeply loving — but she does need a family who understands that trust doesn’t come instantly for her. Jess wants connection and affection; fear, very often, just gets in the way. She does best with a thoughtful balance of patience and frequent, positive interaction — steady reassurance that she is safe and loved.
Jess is incredibly smart and has quickly learned to walk beautifully on leash without pulling and will heel on command, even off leash. She is crate trained and often chooses her crate as a safe place when she feels nervous. Like any young dog, she has a playful side and loves a good game of fetch and time spent playing with her companion dogs, running and exploring. We are working on bird dog basics in the hopes it will help build confidence and deepen her connection to her handler which will ideally transfer to her forever family.
We see so much potential in Jess, and we know she will thrive with the right people — those willing to give her the time and kindness she deserves and can meet her short, but essential list of needs.
A secure, fully fenced yard is necessary for her. Being outdoors brings her peace, and until she has fully settled, she may not yet recognize her new family or home as her safe place. Without a secure fence, there is a real risk that she could run off and be difficult to get back. Equally important, Jess must have a canine companion in the home— another dog who enjoys active play and can match her energy level, which is very typical of a Pointer. Another dog will play a vital role in her transition, serving as her first teacher, trusted playmate, and steady source of confidence and comfort. Jess will do best in a home where she receives regular, consistent interaction as part of a daily routine. This is essential for her emotional stability and continued progress. A home where interaction is infrequent or inconsistent is likely to cause her to regress. At this time, Jess is still most comfortable in spaces that feel quiet and removed from people, so steady, predictable engagement from her family is a non‑negotiable requirement to help her build trust and confidence.
If you have room in your home and your heart for a sweet, sensitive girl who needs a happy ending, we hope you’ll consider Jess — our darling Jess Bess.
