Guidelines for Transporting:

During transport, always drive safely and be aware of your cargo. All crates must be in the vehicle and in the back seat. Ensure when you receive the dog, or prior to, that you have the required veterinary paperwork for transport, veterinary records and meds if required. Ensure these are given to the next transporter or to the adopter/foster, as well as any other supplies (food, toys, blankets etc) that are traveling with the dog. Please respect everyone’s time and make all attempts to keep to a schedule and work well with others. We suggest the following in all transporters vehicles prior to transport:

• Printed "run sheet" with all transport phone numbers and details 
• Disinfected, safe, appropriately-sized hard-sided crates for animals (strongly recommended)
• Collars/harnesses and extra leashes if possible
• Large clean water bowl
• Fresh water

Stressed Animals
Assume all animals are suffering from stress of travel and meeting new people. Give each animal a short walk and access to water at each transport spot. Handle gently. Please be especially cautious with children, remember many under-socialized animals are fearful of children. Stressed animals may bite!

NOTE: Leave your pets at home, unless you have discussed this in advance with your coordinator. 

Assume the transport animals have recently lived in high-volume animal shelters or very busy foster homes and they have been potentially exposed to various diseases. Disinfect crates and vehicle surfaces before and after transport. Wash bedding after each transport. 

Escape of a stressed animal
PRO makes all attempts to send every dog with a collar and harness on during transport. Ensure collars and harnesses are fitted properly and put on correctly; ask for assistance in fitting if required. Before unloading, ensure leashes and harnesses have not been chewed through and that snaps and clips are working properly and not broken or cracked. Keep animals leashed and either tethered or crated at all times. Put your hand through the leash loop and grasp the leash firmly. Don't leave uncrated, untethered, or tethered animals in vehicles with open windows or hatches. Remember a tethered animal next to an open window may jump!

Should an animal escape during transport contact your transport monitor IMMEDIATELY. Most transport animals will not respond to their names or come on command. If an animal has escaped, IMMEDIATE action is required by all transport drivers to capture the animal. This is a very difficult situation. Use treats to lure the animal, sit on the ground and coax playfully, run in the other direction playfully. Remember, chasing can be the worst choice of action.

Damage to your vehicle from chewing or use of claws
Accept responsibility for the care of your vehicle. Assume the animals will be under stress from which chewing and pawing manifest occasionally. Animals can also act unpredictably during stressful situations such as transport. The rescue and transport coordinator can't assume repair costs from damage during your transport. If you use crates and take all appropriate care, damage to your vehicle is unlikely.
