Hi, I’m Penn. I used to live in Sweet Home Alabama. Now, I live in Sweet Home California. I’m hoping to soon be moving to Sweet Home Forever.

I live in a foster family with four other dogs, and I get along with everyone. I’m patient with the one who growls at me, and try to play with some of the other ones. I also try to play with new dogs we meet out on the trails. I’m a playful guy. But I’m also a hard worker. I love to spend time in a big yard hunting for lizards or chipmunks or chasing birds. I also love to go for walks. I have a really good recall so I can be off leash, and I’m learning to check back in to make sure that foster Mom is still coming along. She isn’t that fast, but she carries treats.

When we meet new people on the trail, I usually go right up to them and shyly let them know that they can pet me if they want. I have figured out that there are two kinds of people in the world—the ones who look at me and say, “What a Handsome Dog!” And the ones who rub my ears and say, “What a Sweet Boy!”

I have also met small dogs and after a sniff or two, I go back to hunting and watching for birds. I haven’t met any cats, but if they run, I might chase them.

In the house, I’m pretty calm, especially if we have been out for a good walk. I sometimes like to explore the kitchen and see if anything interesting has been left in the recycling bin. I have a very good nose and a curious mind.

If you want to sit down next to me and rub my belly and scratch gently behind my ears, I’ll melt and be yours forever.

I enjoy a car ride and going to new and interesting places. I am nervous if those places are busy or crowded; traffic and commotion scare me. In the busy places, I just want to go back to the car. But exploring new places that are quiet, especially if we all go together, that can be really fun.

I hope I find a forever family who understands me and likes to do all the things that I like to do, a forever family who will want me to be with me and include me.

From Foster Mom- If you are looking for a Sweet, Gentle Boy to accompany you on easy adventures and lean against you as you relax in the evenings, Penn is your guy. He is house trained and crate trained, and if you hide the recycling, he can be left loose in the house when alone. His ideal home will have another dog to play with, a large yard for patrolling, and plenty of adventures to liven his days. He is well behaved when left alone if he has had a good walk, but will prefer to have a family who is around most of the time or takes him along with them.

Penn has had a few episodes of lameness, probably old injuries being exacerbated by too much exercise too soon. He also has a heart murmur and will need to be on medication for the rest of his life and have annual cardiology visits.
