Howie – 6 years old, located in MN
Rescue ID#: 250031-P-D-OH
Intake Date: 1/2/2025
Available Date: 12/15/2025
Howie came into PRO severely emaciated and Heartworm Positive. He completed his heartworm treatment in his rst foster home and then moved to his new foster home in MN. At his new foster home, at a routine vet visit, they discovered two suspicious lumps that turned out to be mast cell tumors. They were both low grade, there hasn’t been a recurrence, and veterinary recommendations were that no additional treatment is needed. After all that, Howie started limping and it was discovered that he has elbow dysplasia. This poor guy can’t get a break. The good news is that with an NSAID, and some joint supplements, Howie is comfortable and active.
Howie loves to patrol the yard and search the bushes for rabbits, frogs, and birds. He accompanies his foster dad and resident canines on long walks around the lake in summer where he enjoys splashing in the shallows, and he is a solid swimmer. Howie is absolutely obsessed with shing (gluing himself to your side while intensely watching your shing line from the dock or walking on the boat rails trying to get closer to that next sh). He’s not the biggest fan of Minnesota winters, but enjoys walks on the lake with the rest of his pack when temperatures allow. His limp is present, but less pronounced outdoors where he gets along at a good gallop and can go for hours while exploring.
Howie is great with people. He is easy going and independent. He will gently seek attention and is also happy to just spend time near you. He has great recall, sits down and waits for a good head scratching every time he comes indoors, doesn’t jump on people or furniture, and is house trained. He is one of those rare pointers who is ready for anything and eager to participate in all your outings, but also content to lie in the sun or chew on a toy when it is that kind of day.
Though Howie is currently living with two foster brothers, it seems like he will be happiest as an only dog where he can get all the attention for himself. In order to manage his elbow dysplasia, it is important that his future home can provide plenty of outdoor space and opportunity for running and/or swimming to keep his muscle tone up.
Now that Howie’s health issues have been taken care of, he is ready for his happily ever after.
If you are looking for a super handsome guy, a steady companion who can entertain himself or accompany you on your adventures, a shing buddy, and a warm body to share your couch and your popcorn, Howie is your dog.
