Meet our pretty Pointer, Sage, thus named because she is smart and little bit sly. We believe and we are consistently told what a pretty dog she is. She was 6 months old approx. July 16th; we rescued her at about 3 months so don’t have her exact birthday; 1/16/25 is the approximation with the help of two vets.
We have been tempted to keep her because she is rounding into a very good dog, but we have another puppy and with our schedules and plans we just can’t see a way to keep two. I do more game hunting than bird hunting, but she already points in our backyard and all indications are that she could easily become a great hunting dog. For us she is mostly an indoor pet, with a fenced in backyard to roam a few times per day and occasional walks on a leash. The first time we put her on a leash she wouldn’t take a step, now she walks nicely, doesn’t pull too much, and is beginning to understand what I mean by “heel!”
Just one of the ways she is so loving and makes us chuckle—we’ll be sitting in our comfy chairs watching TV, and Sage will come over and lay her head on our knee, and after we pet her and talk nice to her, she’ll just flop down on our feet and lay down, satisfied! She is SO lovable!
When by herself, she is already getting pretty calm. When she goes in the yard, she loves chasing lizards or squirrels! But when she is paired with our other puppy (a male lab mix that is about the same size—Sage was 54 lbs. about a week ago), they get pretty wild, wrestling and nibbling at each other very playfully. The few times she has been around a female dog she was a bit more wary, but still fine. Around children (we have 5 grandkids 2-7 yrs old we see frequently) she gets excited to see these people “her size,” but friendly.
She is kennel trained…kind of, still working on it. She is getting a lot more fond of it, but has chewed up two beds in the kennel in her 3+ months with us. On that track, she LOVES her chew toys, including deer antlers, and has not gotten after any of our furniture, luckily. She was also pretty easily trained NOT to go on any furniture (couches, human beds, etc.), and with us she is good about not jumping up, but when guests come over she still is jumping up to greet them! Besides “heel,” we are working on “come” and “sit” as commands, and she is doing pretty well but not perfect yet.
The great news is that she sleeps great—we don’t kennel her for bedtime, we let her sleep on the floor in our room (on a dog cushion). When we go to bed she does too and does not get up until we do, then goes outside to go potty. She was quickly house trained and we haven’t had an inside accident since the week after we rescued her (she was on a small ranch for about a month when we rescued her—not sure how she landed there but think she was left there by original owners).
Another of her cute habits is to come over to you and turn around so her behind is near you and begs you to scratch her backside! She’s pretty darn cute! We hate to give her up but whoever adopts her will have a lovely pet as a mate to keep loving on you for a long time!
Last points—we have a pool in our backyard and she has never tried to go in it, even though it is wide open (we keep a close eye out, or at least did for the first few months)—we like it that way. And a pleasant surprise for us, after our last few dogs that had absolute fits in noisy thunder or fireworks, is that she is not bothered at all by loud noises as such, or even by that loud rain we get in the Houston area.
Overall, we’re just looking to plant her in a good, safe, friendly home. She’ll make your time and environment more loving and enjoyable—she loves to be touching you! She’s had her shots and is on heartworm prevention.
