Wanted: A heart human for a gem of a dog

Adoptable Oreo is looking for a furever human(s) that she can love, cuddle with and go for walks. She would be happy to be a companion but also feels that she has wonderful skills as a back seat driver. She will keep you company in your home office or be a copilot as she loves to go along for the ride!

Oreo is a special dog!  So why has she been a foster for over 4 years living with three different families?  It is not because of her temperament. I am sure that all of her foster families would attest to that. Oreo is a good-natured and gentle dog at her core.  She loves people and puts her whole heart into enjoying petting and attention.  While she has extremes of both calmness and excitement, her calmness is displayed about 80 percent of the time.  Her excitement comes from enthusiasm of walks, dogs on walks (or barking in the neighborhood), deer and people who she considers friends she hasn’t met yet and should meet!  Using a halti on walks helps to moderate the excitement in addition to commands to help her focus forward rather than on the passing animals or people. She also is enthusiastic about food, which makes training sessions enjoyable if you moderate the value of the treat. She is happy to sit beside you on the couch or snuggle up next to you in bed.  She is able to live in a home as the only dog or in a multi-dog family (with proper introduction}. Being a stray when she was young, she did not learn the niceties of social interaction and uses a low growl to mean a lot of different things. The meaning can range from uncertainty about a situation, initiation of play with the resident whippet, “you are crowding me on the bed as I need more than half of it”, or a purr of enjoyment when you pet her.  She also has a range of groans, squeals of excitement, and singing (the last especially when she is excited to be fed.  While she has a range of noises and occasional barking, she is, for the most part, a very quiet dog.  But it does add to her personality!  She also uses non-verbal communication such as pacing and toe tapping by the door to indicate her need to go outside. These communications make her easy to understand her needs. She is housebroken and crate trained.  She loves bones and rarely chews up other items, although stuffed animals have to be hidden.

So why has she not been adopted yet?

Oreo has some special needs. She came into PRO from a high-kill shelter in Florida with infected eyes.  She underwent entropion surgery as her eyelids turned in and left her with some scarring around the eyes. As a result, Oreo is on eye drops to assist with tear production. Additionally, while in Florida, Oreo suffered from allergies which also affected her eyes and has been on several other oral medications and supplements to manage this.  However, the good news is that when she moved to a foster home in the Northeast, her allergies drastically reduced, resulting in an elimination of most of her oral medications and some of the supplements used for the side effects of those medications.

Now that Oreo is in a very heathy place and her medical needs have been greatly reduced, she is in the perfect place to be matched with a fur-ever home! So, if you are looking for a dog that will steal your heart, look no further! Oreo will fill the position with much joy for all of you.
